You may have heard some success stories about love blossoming between people who meet online. There are now thousands of marriages which resulted from friendships and romance that bloomed in some online dating sites. Are you wondering if online dating is right for you?
These days, internet dating has evolved from merely a past time, to some serious business, as more and more people use online dating services to find friends and partners. The industry has also improved with more specialized dating niche sites and more technological advances in their sites. Most of these sites have incorporated other means for communication, aside from the usual email. Now most members can do text and voice chats, upload and share photos and videos, send instant messaging and even play online games together. These sites have evolved into social networking sites, which is a good sign, as more people can see other members on real time and can also immediately verify if the person they are talking with is the same one on the picture on his or her profile.
Online dating sites do have their pros and cons, and if you are just a newbie to these sites, it may do you well to understand these. On the pro side, online dating provides you a lot of options, too much in fact, that you need to narrow down your choices to what you are really looking for.
Membership in most online dating sites are usually free which gives it more of a plus, as compared with hanging out in bars, hoping to meet someone interesting. There are some sites, however, that will require you to pay a monthly recurring fee that will give you access to their database or to other premium areas of the site.
You are saved from awkward first dates, because you get to meet and chat people online first before you decide to meet them in person. By the time you set a face to face meeting, you would have known more details about your online date, that you won’t run out of things to talk about, as is usual in first dates.
On the con side, however, you would always have to exercise caution, as there are often people who would try to get on online dating sites to find the weak and the vulnerable and take advantage of them. Be cautious of people who express “love” too soon, and who are asking too many personal questions on the early stages of your communication.
Another negative side of online dating sites is that some of them can suddenly hit you with unexpected charges. For example, they may issue a “come on” saying that you can post your profile for free, but when someone tries to connect with you, the site will charge you a fee to see the other person’s profile. Always read the terms of use before you sign up on online dating sites, and do not give out your credit card information too soon.
Of course, you may also meet people who intentionally lie about themselves in the hope of catching your attention. In such cases, trust your instincts and if you feel that a person is suspicious, block that person from contacting you.
If despite all the negative aspects of online dating, it hasn’t lost its appeal to you, then maybe you should give it a try. One word of caution – be careful in giving out too much personal information, as there are people out there who have the wrong intentions in joining these online dating sites.
