In most ads, you send your letter to a post office box number.  For your safety, you should have a post office box to receive any replies.  Until you know the person you are writing too, you should not give them your home address.  The only thing that you know about this person is what they have written in the personal ad.  They say that they are a widow, own their own business, and other stuff.  You do not know if this is true or not.  The person you make contact with could be a serial killer.

Yes, they could be a serial killer, or just some mad rapist.  Dating personals would be a great way to meet their next victim.  They could talk very sweet and loving in the letters, send you a bogus picture and then when you agree to meet, they are not what they portrayed in their letters.  This is also another reason that you should always meet the first few times in a public place with lots of people around.  Never let them walk you to your car.  If possible, use a cab.

Not every person who answers or writes a personal ad is bad.  There are genuine people who write these ads who seriously want to meet a nice person.  They are what they write in their ads.  You just need to be careful when arranging a meeting.  If you were the one placing the ad in the dating personals, the person answering your ad hopes you are genuine too.

When you place the ad, just include the basic information.  Just use your first name or nickname.  Since it is going to a particular post office box, it does not need a name on it.  Usually the ads have a number at the end of the ad that you put on envelope.  The letters that go to the post office box are picked up by the publication and then they are sent to you.  Only the publication knows your real address.

You can include things like your hobbies, maybe a brief description of what you look like but never give out your work or home address or phone number.  Do not give the one you are writing to anyway to contact you except by letter to the post office box you have set up.  Do not worry that all dating personals are linked to mad rapists or serial killers.  Some nice people out there use these services to meet other nice people.  Just be careful what you share before you meet them.  Err on the side of caution when using this service.
